Getting to a patient within 2.6 minutes

Ng Teng Fong General Hospital has a Code Blue activation system that gets the emergency response team to a patient who requires resuscitation, all within 2.6 minutes.

Every second counts and the rate of survival increases if the team can get to a collapsed patient faster.

NTFGH announced this at a media briefing this morning and is the first hospital in Singapore to implement this system.

There are a total of 1,600 code blue activation buttons around the hospital, including the patients’ bedside; and the code blue team can be activated to the incident location with a touch of a button.

The code blue team includes ICU Doctors, a nurse and a respiratory therapist. The team also carries special cards that allows them to intercept lifts, and bypass all unnecessary storeys so as to get to a patient faster.

Dr Tan Chee Keat, Head and Senior Consultant, Intensive Care Medicine, NTFGH also shared that 60 to 70 % of patients can show signs of deterioration up to 6 to 8 hours before they go into cardiac arrest [peri-arrest]. She said, “This system also allows us to catch these patients and get to them faster so that they have a better chance of survival.”
