Profile

Dr Petrina Tan is a Consultant Ophthalmologist practising at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Jurong Medical Centre. She graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2005. She completed her ophthalmology training with a Master in Ophthalmology (FAMS, Ophth) and attained Fellowship to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd) in 2013. In 2015, she obtained a Health Manpower Development Plan award for fellowship training in Queen Victoria Hospital, United Kingdom. The hospital is renowned for pioneering plastic reconstructive techniques in the treatment of aircrew members who suffered serious burns during the Battle of Britain in World War II.

Dr Tan specialises in oculoplastic surgery (droopy eyelid surgery, lower eyelid eyebags, lower eyelid malpositions), lacrimal surgery (management of tearing, nasolacrimal tear duct obstruction, infections) and orbital surgery (thyroid eye disease, orbital fractures, orbital tumours). She is also well versed in comprehensive ophthalmology, including complex cataract surgeries, toric and multi-focal intraocular lens implantations, and pterygium excision with conjunctival graft (fibrin glue).

Dr Tan brings back with her novel surgical techniques, including incision-less ptosis repair (“posterior approach white line advancement”) and incision-less tear duct surgery. Asian patients have a greater tendency for post-operative inflammation and scarring. Incision-less surgeries, such as the posterior approach ptosis surgery and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy, are therefore particularly useful for Asians. She is committed to achieving good functional results and aesthetic outcomes for her patients.

Keeping up to date with the latest developments in ophthalmology is also a priority for Dr Tan. She is active in research publications and has published widely in the field of rehabilitation of patients with facial nerve palsy, posterior approach ptosis surgery and dermal fillers. She is also a reviewer for several ophthalmology journals, including the Journal of Ophthalmology and the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
